FABRIC TERMINOLOGY

  • Cotton

    A natural fiber that comes from the seedpod of the cotton plant and is used to make many fabric types.

  • Bamboo

    Bamboo fibres are all cellulose fibre extracted or fabricated from natural bamboo. It is similar or greater in tensility to cotton.

  • Sateen

    Sateen fabric is made by the using the satin weaving method. The sateen structure is four over, one under, placing the most threads on the surface and a matte, flat finish on the underside.

  • Percale

    Percale is made with the longest fibres of cotton. Made with a plain, or basket weave which is one thread over, one thread under, a method in use for hundreds of years. This weave gives the fabric its strength and durability, a matte finish with a cool and crisp feel. Has a slightly lighter weight than sateen.

  • Poplin

    Poplin is a plain weave cotton fabric characterized by crossgrain ribs. The rib is created by combining fine warp threads with thicker weft threads. Because these threads are thicker, they stand out more. This is what forms the ribbed effect, resulting in a strong, crisp fabric with a silky, lustrous surface.

  • Viscose Rayon

    Viscose Rayon is a semi-synthetic fabric commonly used as a substitute for silk, composed of regenerated and purified cellulose derived from plant sources and behaves much like cotton.

  • Crepe

    Crepe is a weaving or fabric treatment method of highly twisted yarns woven in plain weave, that results in a distinctively crisp and crimped appearance when the cloth is wet finished.

  • Tencel

    A semi-synthetic fabric made from the natural cellulose found in wood pulp. This fabric feels like soft cotton. Drapes smoothly and is soft, light, and comfortable.

  • Twill

    Twill is a type of textile weave with a pattern of diagonal parallel ribs. Twill is one of 3 main types of textile weaves. It is made by passing the weft thread over one or more warp threads then under two or more warp threads, with an offset between rows to create a diagonal pattern.
